  1. Audio Compositor 2.1

  3. Introduction
  4. ============

  6. Audio Compositor is software for realizing MIDI data as digital audio.
  7. When the input comes from a standard MIDI file, Audio Compositor can
  8. realize it as a Windows .WAV file, or if your processor is fast enough
  9. it can play the MIDI file in real time.  When the input is a MIDI keyboard
  10. attached to your computer, Audio Compositor behaves like a normal sound
  11. module, though its capabilities will again be limited by the speed of your
  12. processor.  Audio Compositor also provides a graphical environment for
  13. editing samples and patches.

  15. Audio Compositor runs on Windows 95, and on Windows NT 3.51 or above.

  17. Version 2.1 of Audio Compositor is shareware; please consider registering
  18. it.  Registration unlocks certain features of the program that are absent
  19. from the unregistered version.  For details, see "Register Audio Compositor..."
  20. on the Help menu.  In its unregistered state, Audio Compositor may be freely
  21. distributed so long as the program and all supporting files are retained and
  22. unmodified.

  24. While Audio Compositor is fully documented in AC.HLP, you can set up the
  25. program quickly by following the directions below.  The distribution includes
  26. a set of classical guitar samples and a MIDI file with which you can do a test
  27. run.  Please note that these demonstration files were chosen for their small
  28. size and not for their quality!

  36. Installing Audio Compositor

  39. There is no "setup" program for Audio Compositor; simply unzip the distribution
  40. into a directory of your choice.  If you unzip with the directory structure
  41. intact, there is nothing more to do; otherwise you must move the guitar samples
  42. to a subdirectory called Samples\Guitar under the directory where the program
  43. is installed.  For example, if you placed the files in
  44.  
  45.     d:\Dubious-looking-software\Ac
  46.  
  47. then the twelve guitar samples should be placed in
  48.  
  49.     d:\Dubious-looking-software\Ac\Samples\Guitar
  50.  
  51. If you set up an icon or shortcut to start Ac.exe, set the working directory
  52. (the "Start in" field under Win95) to be the directory where Ac.exe is located.

  54. To deinstall Audio Compositor, delete the files that came with the
  55. installation, plus Ac.ini in your Windows directory.

  58. The Leyenda Example
  59. ===================

  61. Audio Compositor comes with one MIDI file, an abbreviated version of Isaac
  62. Albeniz's "Leyenda" that is prepared to work with the included guitar samples.
  63. To try it:
  64.  
  65.   1.    Run Audio Compositor (Ac.exe), choose "Open Midi File..." from
  66.     the File menu, and open Leyenda.mid.
  67.  
  68.   2.    From the Edit menu, choose Settings.
  69.  
  70.   3.    Move to the Constants tab in the Setup dialog.  Confirm that Output
  71.     Sample Rate is set to 22050 (this is the highest rate that the
  72.     unregistered version supports.)  Be sure that Stereo Output is not
  73.     checked (if you have a Pentium or faster CPU, this precaution is
  74.     probably not needed, but the guitar samples are monophonic anyway).
  75.     Attenuation should be set to 12 dB for this file.

  77.   4.    Click OK to dismiss the Setup dialog.

  79.   5.    Be sure that the the Audible button (the loudspeaker icon) is
  80.     depressed; this turns on real-time output.

  82.   6.    Click the Go button.

  84. If you hear gaps in the playback, Audio Compositor is not running fast enough
  85. to create its output in real time.  This won't affect its ability to produce
  86. good .WAV file output.  To create an output file, repeat the steps above but
  87. specify an Output File Name under the Files tab of the Setup dialog (you will
  88. need about 5 megs of disk space).

  90. Note: In the Leyenda example, you will hear some hesitation after each of the
  91. strummed chords later in the piece.  Guitarists generally don't try to play
  92. this passage in strict time, and the MIDI file contains tempo changes meant to
  93. approximate the usual practice.  It's not a symptom of any timing inaccuracy
  94. in Audio Compositor.
